Magnum Square Print Sale titled Youth

In October, Magnum partnered with Aperture for the Square Print Sale titled Youth. Youth is about a moment, a memory, a state of becoming. It is the spark of firsts: the first glance, the first protest, the first kiss, the first fall, the first revelation. With more than one hundred images selected by the photographers themselves, the sale explored the many faces of Youth, across generations and regions.

The Magnum Square Print Sale took place through the Magnum Photos Shop and ran until Sunday, 26 October, at 23:59 hrs.

Youth captures the electric charge of growing up. It brings together icons in their prime, such as Dennis Stock’s enigmatic portrait of James Dean, Danny Clinch’s photograph of Bruce Springsteen and Philippe Halsman’s photograph of Brigitte Bardot, as well as photographs of those who were young at heart, such as Werner Bischoff’s portrait of Frida Kahlo, months before her death.

It captures moments ranging from the young and restless teenagers photographed by Robert Capa, drinking on a film set, to Raymond Depardon’s bubble-gum blowers in Glasgow.

Intimate portraits trace a picture of self-discovery: Olivia Arthur’s child on the verge of change and Alec Soth’s lone dancer both capture the spirit of youth, regardless of age.

This selection reminds us of our own beginnings and shows how being youthful is not only a period in our lives, but also a state of mind.

The Magnum Square Print Sale, presented in partnership with Aperture, included work by various artists represented in both historical and contemporary Aperture publications and initiatives that year.

This selection reminds us of our own beginnings and shows how being youthful is not only a period in our lives, but also a state of mind.

Part of the proceeds from the sale went directly to the artists and supported the full range of Aperture’s non-profit publishing and educational programmes in New York and worldwide.
