For the photography exhibition FLASH | BACK, sixteen top photographers - including Erwin Olaf, Rineke Dijkstra, Anton Corbijn, Ahmet Polat and Sanja Marušić - were inspired by the seventeenth-century paintings from the Mauritshuis.
The result: sixteen new photos. One for each room of the Mauritshuis. The new works hang, stand and lie among their 17th-century sources of inspiration. Thanks to these new masterpieces, the exhibition invites you to see Rembrandt, Vermeer and Jan Steen in a new light.
The participating photographers are Sara Blokland, Morad Bouchakour, Anton Corbijn, Elspeth Diederix, Desirée Dolron, Rineke Dijkstra, Kadir van Lohuizen, Sanja Marusic, Vincent Mentzel, Erwin Olaf, Kevin Osepa, Ahmet Polat, Carla van de Puttelaar, Viviane Sassen, Dustin Thierry and Stephan Vanfleteren.
The photographers are all from the Netherlands or Flanders. Just like the painters of our masterpieces. The new masters studied each painting in great detail before making their choice. You can see iconic works and audience favorites, as well as lesser-known gems in FLASH | BACK.
Expect sixteen original and surprising perspectives on seventeenth-century art. No photo is a remake of the original painting.
Martine Gosselink: "About 350 to 500 years of time have passed between the making of the paintings and the taking of these photos. The exhibition - supplemented by a catalog and multimedia tour - offers visitors a journey from then to now, from eternity to transience, from varnish and paint to high-resolution photographic material. The photographers let us see again, through their lens."
The photographers, both established names and emerging talents, are all from the Netherlands or Flanders, just like the painters behind the masterpieces. They often visited the museum several times to make a final choice and study the work in great detail. Their selection is surprising and includes both iconic works and lesser-known gems.
