Newcomers to photography can face a steep learning curve; they sometimes have to explore an unfamiliar new world. Virtues and Vices in Photography reveals, in collaboration with Canon photographers, the lessons, pitfalls, highs, and lows of the industry. These professional photographers offer valuable advice specific to their field.
In this installment: ten top tips from fashion photographer Saurabh Dua.

A common mistake photographers make is shooting exactly as expected. I call this the ‘comfort zone’. Every time, I try to break out of it through my compositions, lighting patterns, and so on.

Three common mistakes fashion photographers make:
- taking the most obvious approach to the image
- experimenting extensively with lighting without a clear vision
- being predictable and failing to experiment

Planning every shoot in advance is extremely important and essential if the entire team is to work towards the desired result.
Key things to remember before a shoot:
- scout the location if shooting outdoors
- check what equipment is needed for the specific job
- estimate the number of team members and assistants needed to carry out the project
- cast the right talent for what needs to be portrayed

When photographing men or women, I choose to capture them in a very raw way, preferably looking as natural as possible. This creates a timeless feel. Where possible, I also opt for no make-up, or very little, so I can focus on the emotions and feelings in my image.

The hardest thing for me is always ensuring that the photograph does not look too posed. I encourage the model to appear natural while still creating a strong presence.

Look for ways to add interesting elements to the background or foreground. The shadows of a tree branch, the silhouette of a building, incorporating existing architecture into the image... Elements like these make a photograph interesting and distinctive.

Photography is an art form, but mastering it takes plenty of practice and sustained hard work. You need to learn from your mistakes and regularly assess your work with a critical eye.

Although you can be spontaneous during a shoot, it is important to plan everything carefully first. When you know everything is organized and the entire team is prepared, it is easier to improvise and then return to the original plan once you are done.
9.
Every fashion photographer has their own way of lighting models. Gradually develop your own approach until it becomes distinctive. Eventually, you will have developed a strong identity that people instantly recognise as your style.
10.
There are no rules in photography. You can break and transform anything you like, and no one will stop you.
