What immediately stands out is that this camera was designed from the outset with vertical photography in mind. The LCD screen has a 3:4 aspect ratio, perfectly suited to how we now take and share photos with smartphones.
The X half adds its own twist with a clever 2-in-1 function that lets you combine two portraits or vertical videos into a single image directly in the camera. This makes visual storytelling that little bit richer.
The nostalgic approach extends beyond the camera’s appearance. There is also the new Film Camera Mode. You choose a film simulation in advance (also available in the Fujifilm X-M5) and a maximum number of shots. The images are not revealed until your ‘roll’ is full. The familiar film advance lever is back, creating a rhythmic, analog feel while shooting – something rarely encountered today.
In terms of image rendering, the X half also remains true to its analog inspiration. The camera includes several classic film simulations (such as the new REALA ACE) and a lifelike film grain effect. Additional creative filters such as light leaks, flares, and the ‘Expired Film’ effect create a warm, vintage look. And for those who appreciate the details, you can add date and time stamps, just like in the past.
The camera features a fixed 32mm F2.8 lens (35mm equivalent), paired with a 17,74 megapixel 1-inch backside-illuminated sensor. It produces sharp, high-contrast images with a natural angle of view – comparable to Fujifilm’s iconic QuickSnap disposable camera.
With the companion X half app (for iOS and Android), you can easily transfer images to your phone, where you can edit, share, or print them directly on an instax printer. The app also offers options for 2-in-1 compositions, contact sheets, and ordering photo products. Prints will initially be delivered in Japan, with a global rollout planned.
The X half includes three new filters inspired by analog photography: Light Leak, Halation, and Expired Film. Eight popular filters from the instax series are also available for additional creative freedom.
The Grain Effect adds natural film grain across the entire image, creating a tangible, film-like texture. This effect can be applied to both photos and videos.
The interface consists of two rear LCD screens operated with swipes and taps. This makes it easy to adjust settings and simulations intuitively without compromising the compact design.
The optical viewfinder shows the subject exactly as the eye sees it. Thanks to its energy-efficient design, you can take up to 880 shots on a single battery charge – ideal for a full day of photography.
