Leica lenses have a rich tradition that goes back more than one hundred and fifty years. During that time, countless hand-crafted masterpieces have been created that set new standards in image quality.
The legendary Leica M lenses have been part of this history for more than seventy years, and each of them has provided iconic photographs. Some of these classics are now being brought back to life, this also applies to the new Leica Summilux-M 50 f/1.4.
The Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 (I) was launched in 1959 as the very first lens under the name Summilux, derived from the Latin 'summa lux', or 'maximum light'. Since then, Summilux has stood for particularly bright Leica lenses with an aperture of f/1.4 to f/1.7. The new version combines the classic vintage look, with state-of-the-art technology, and is the fifth member of the Leica Classic line.
Just like the Summaron-M 28 f/5.6, the Thambar-M 90 f/2.2, the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH. and the Summilux-M 35 f/1.4, its timeless aesthetic is reminiscent of its historical predecessor.
The optical calculation is based on the second Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 (II), of which an almost unchanged version was produced between 1962 and 2004. This lens is known for its impressive image quality and unparalleled character at full aperture.
The new Summilux-M captures moments in that unique style and offers a particularly soft bokeh when the aperture is fully open, making it ideal for portrait photography.
When the aperture is reduced, the new lens delivers sharper and higher-contrast images than its historic predecessor. This is ensured by modern production techniques and the use of special types of glass. The new edition of this classic lens meets all the requirements of modern high-resolution M cameras. Compared to the historic model, it offers even more creative freedom thanks to the extra short focusing distance of 0.7 m.
Like all M system lenses the new Summilux-M proudly carries the label “Made in Germany” and reflects the quality for which Leica lenses are known worldwide. The lens is handmade from solid brass and equipped with a high-quality, round vintage lens hood. As the new standard lens in the Leica Classic line, it combines a charming vintage design with technical precision of the highest level.
The Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 is the first Leica lens to be supplied in a completely newly designed package. These high-quality boxes contain no plastic and are also produced in Germany.
