This new version of a historic M classic expands the Leica Classic line with a lens that delivers distinctive bokeh: the Leica Summilux-M 50 f/1.4.
Leica lenses have a rich tradition stretching back more than one hundred fifty years. During that time, countless handcrafted masterpieces have set new standards for image quality.
The legendary Leica M lenses have been part of this history for more than seventy years, and each has helped create iconic photographs. Some of these classics are now being revived, including the new Leica Summilux-M 50 f/1.4.
The Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 (I) was introduced in 1959 as the first lens to bear the Summilux name, derived from the Latin “summa lux,” meaning “maximum light.” Since then, Summilux has denoted particularly fast Leica lenses with maximum apertures from f/1.4 to f/1.7. The new version combines a classic vintage appearance with state-of-the-art technology and is the fifth member of the Leica Classic line.
Like the Summaron-M 28 f/5.6, the Thambar-M 90 f/2.2, the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH. and the Summilux-M 35 f/1.4, its timeless aesthetic recalls its historic predecessor.
Meanwhile, Leica has expanded the Classic line with the very limited-availability Summicron-M 66 f/2, based on a rare lens originally developed for the US Navy.
The optical design is based on the second Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 (II), an almost unchanged version of which was produced from 1962 through 2004. That lens is known for its impressive image quality and distinctive character wide open.
The new Summilux-M captures moments in that distinctive style and produces especially soft bokeh at maximum aperture, making it ideal for portrait photography.
When stopped down, the new lens produces sharper, higher-contrast images than its historic predecessor. Modern manufacturing techniques and special glass types make this possible. This new edition of the classic lens meets the requirements of modern high-resolution M cameras. Compared with the historic model, it also offers more creative freedom through a shorter minimum focusing distance of 0.7 m.
Like all M system lenses proudly bears the “Made in Germany” label and reflects the quality for which Leica lenses are known worldwide. The lens is handcrafted from solid brass and includes a high-quality round vintage lens hood. As the new standard lens in the Leica Classic line, it combines charming vintage styling with outstanding technical precision.
The Summilux-M 50 f/1.4 is the first Leica lens supplied in completely redesigned packaging. These high-quality boxes contain no plastic and are also made in Germany.
