Leica is expanding the SL system with the Leica SL3-P, a new full-frame mirrorless camera for photographers and filmmakers who want to combine high image quality with speed, stability, and a professional workflow. The camera features a 44-megapixel BSI full-frame sensor, a new hybrid autofocus system, and extensive video capabilities up to 8K Open Gate.
The SL3-P complements the previously discussed Leica L3-S. While that camera primarily emphasizes speed and video, the SL3-P uses its 44-megapixel sensor to place greater emphasis on resolution within the same hybrid SL family.
Building on the SL system
Leica introduced the SL system in 2015 as a professional full-frame system for photography and videography. It is based on the L-Mount and combines Leica’s build quality with modern mirrorless-camera technology. Through the L-Mount Alliance, the SL3-P is also compatible with a broad selection of lenses from Leica and other manufacturers.
Alongside the SL3-P, Leica is also announcing two new SL lenses: the Summilux-SL 50 f/1.4 ASPH. and the APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100 f/2.8. These further expand the system for portrait, reportage, macro, and studio work.
44-megapixel BSI full-frame sensor
The Leica SL3-P has a new 44-megapixel BSI full-frame sensor. That resolution provides extensive detail while remaining practical for a range of workflows. You can shoot at 44 or 26 megapixels in either DNG or JPG. This lets you choose between maximum detail and smaller files for each assignment.
For situations requiring even more resolution, the camera has a Multishot mode of up to 176 megapixels. This is especially useful for product photography, artwork documentation, architecture, and other work where the highest level of detail matters. Dynamic range extends to 14 stops, and the ISO range runs from ISO 50 to 200,000, making the camera broadly usable in different lighting conditions.
Hybrid autofocus with 819 AF points
The new autofocus system combines phase detection, contrast detection, and object detection. In total, the SL3-P has 819 AF points. Intelligent subject recognition allows the camera to track people, animals, and vehicles while automatically prioritizing eyes and faces.
For action and reportage, the camera reaches up to 40 frames per second with continuous autofocus. This makes the SL3-P suitable not only for controlled studio work, but also for dynamic situations on location.
8K Open Gate and ProRes
The Leica SL3-P is also extensively equipped for video. It supports recording at up to 8K resolution, including 8.1K Open Gate in a 3:2 format at up to 30p. This uses the entire sensor area, providing additional flexibility in post-production. It is useful when the same footage will later be used in different aspect ratios.
The camera also offers 5.9K recording at up to 60 frames per second and 4K slow motion at up to 120p. 8K RAW output is available over HDMI to an external recorder. The built-in Apple ProRes codec supports recording at up to 5.8K. Combined with L-Log, Leica Pure, and Leica Cine LUTs, the SL3-P is clearly intended for creators who take post-production seriously.
Minimalist design without the red dot
The Leica SL3-P has an understated design with black controls and no familiar red Leica dot on the front. The body is made of metal and is IP54-certified against dust and splashes. This makes the camera suitable for professional use in a variety of conditions.
The controls are fully customizable, and the interface clearly distinguishes between photo and video. Leica uses red and yellow visual accents so you can quickly see which mode you are using. Firmware updates can be installed through the Leica FOTOS App, allowing the camera to continue gaining functionality after launch.
Professional connectivity
For storage, the SL3-P has two card slots: CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II. This supports fast shooting, demanding video files, and immediate backups. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB-C connect the camera to the Leica FOTOS App, where you can transfer images, operate the camera remotely, and apply Leica Looks.
The SL3-P is also well integrated into professional workflows. The camera supports tethering with Lightroom Classic and Capture One, and offers Camera-to-Cloud through Adobe Frame.io. This allows files to be shared quickly with editorial teams, clients, or editors.
Another feature is support for Content Credentials in accordance with the Content Authenticity Initiative. This allows captures to include secure metadata about their origin and editing history. At a time when image manipulation and AI are increasingly debated, this is a relevant addition, particularly for journalistic, editorial, and commercial work.
Price and availability
The Leica SL3-P will be available soon. The suggested retail price is € 5.990,- including VAT.
Leica is also introducing three SL3-P kits with Vario Elmarit SL lenses. The SL3-P 28–70 Vario Kit costs € 6.990,-, the SL3-P 24–70 Vario Kit € 7.490,-, and the SL3-P 24–70 & 70–200 Vario Kit € 9.790,- including VAT.
New SL lenses and kits
Alongside the SL3-P, Leica is also announcing two new SL lenses. The Leica Summilux-SL 50 f/1.4 ASPH. is a fast standard lens with autofocus, a short 50 cm minimum focusing distance, and an all-metal, IP54-protected body.
For macro and portrait photography, Leica is also releasing the Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100 f/2.8, an apochromatically corrected lens with 1:1 magnification and a 30 cm minimum focusing distance. Both lenses are expected in late 2026.
