The Leica SL3 is the latest generation of full-frame mirrorless camera in the Leica SL system.
Leica Camera AG introduced the SL system in 2015 as a distinctive combination of photography and videography. The Leica SL3’s new features were developed through an ongoing dialogue with professionals in the rapidly changing world of photography.
The Leica SL3 combines state-of-the-art technology, exceptional design and robust build quality. It is more compact, lighter and even easier to use than its predecessor.
The core of the Leica SL3 is formed by the BSI CMOS full-frame sensor with Triple Resolution Technology, protected inside a robust all-metal body with an elegant leather covering. To meet different requirements, the sensor records DNG raw files or JPEGs at 60, 36 or 18 megapixels.
The entire sensor surface is used at every resolution. Together with the dynamic range, which has been extended to 15 stops, and the ISO range of 50 to 100,000, the Leica SL3 delivers remarkably detailed images of excellent quality in all lighting conditions.
With phase detection (PDAF), depth mapping (Object Detection AF) and contrast detection (Contrast Detection AF), the innovative autofocus system of the Leica SL3 combines the power of three autofocus technologies to take razor-sharp photos, even in low light. In addition, intelligent subject recognition supports photographing dynamic scenes.
The bayonet uses the L-Mount standard developed by Leica and supports lenses from all Leica camera systems. It is also compatible with a broad range of L-Mount Alliance zoom lenses, from ultra-wide-angle to super-telephoto.
The mount therefore provides broad system compatibility for the Leica SL3. In particular, the potential of renowned Leica M lensesis fully realized through the image-sensor design and an external light sensor. Integrated in-body image stabilization further extends the practical uses of M lenses.
The Leica SL3’s EyeRes viewfinder uses an advanced optical system with glass lens elements. It presents the subject clearly and steadily at up to 120 frames per second and a resolution of 5.76 million dots.
The live preview gives you full control over the exposure and composition of photos, even before you take the shot. Another new feature is the high-resolution tilting 3-inch touchscreen with a tilt mechanism. It provides extra creative possibilities thanks to the extra viewing angles.
Another highlight is the Leica SL3’s new user interface . Every refinement—from ergonomics and tactile feedback to menu navigation—is intended to improve comfort. The grip, control layout and overall camera design have consequently been refined for more intuitive operation.
The updated icons and menus provide a clear structure and easier navigation. Photo and video modes are clearly separated by color coding: red for photography and yellow for video.
In addition, the camera's main functions can be fully customized to individual needs. The freely assignable FN keys and the optimized touch interaction in the menu contribute to the intuitive and comfortable operation of the camera.
When taking photographs or recording video, the Leica SL3 interface rotates between landscape or portrait formataccording to the camera’s orientation.
Convenient controls, improved ergonomics, rugged design and IP54 certification allow photographers to focus on capturing the shot in all weather conditions and environments.
The new BP-SCL6 battery, together with the separately available dual charger, offers more than sufficient capacity. This dual charger allows two batteries to be charged simultaneously and faster.
The dual charger and additional battery are available separately or as a set. In addition, the SL system accessories now include a new handle and DC coupling. The DC coupler plugs into the camera's battery compartment for continuous power via USB-C.
The new carrying strap , with its innovative attachment, and the durable wrist strap for the handgrip were also designed for everyday professional use.
Price and availability
The Leica SL3 was available immediately at launch. Its retail price, like that of the Leica SL2 was € 6,800.00 including VAT.
