Canon RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye lens

Canon RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye lens

The new RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye is an APS-C virtual reality (VR) lens for the EOS R System, joining the existing RF 5.2mm F2.8L DUAL FISHEYE. Its two high-quality fisheye lenses capture stereoscopic 3D 180° VR footage with a 144° field of view on a single image sensor.

Dual fisheye lenses contain two separate lenses positioned side by side to simulate human binocular vision. Each lens captures an image from a slightly different perspective, creating separate views corresponding to the left and right eyes. This stereoscopic effect enables depth perception in VR, making the experience more immersive.

The new 144-degree shooting angle offers a narrower field of view than VR180 capture. Its large depth of field makes it easier for users to concentrate on their subject and reduces the chance that equipment such as lights or tripods will enter the frame.

The focus ring can be assigned to other functions such as aperture or ISO, providing practical shooting control and helping users stay focused on the action. This Canon 3D lens also has a One Shot Autofocus (AF) setting to simplify the creation process.

It is the first Canon lens outside the L-series to feature high-quality Air Sphere coating, which reduces flare and reflections. Each lens contains two UD elements for sharp images. The f/3.5 aperture delivers high-quality results in a range of locations, both indoors and outdoors.

This fisheye lens is suitable for many environments, from dimly lit forests to brightly illuminated stadiums. It also has a rear filter holder for screw-in and gelatin filters, offering additional creative options.

When footage captured with the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye is viewed through a headset, the stereoscopic 3D lens creates a realistic experience. Its 144-degree viewing angle produces a natural forward-facing view that uses peripheral vision to immerse the viewer. The lens’s 60 mm interpupillary distance, comparable to human vision, delivers a realistic 3D effect with a compatible headset.

Price

This new lens reaches the market at a more accessible price than its predecessors. The Canon RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye currently costs €989.
