Yashica is bringing a 1959 design into the present. The new Y16 Pocket Camera will feature a 12-megapixel sensor, an optical viewfinder and a xenon flash. It is a small digital camera with a distinctly retro look, with full specifications and pricing due in early October.
With the Yashica Y16, the pleasure seems to lie mainly in having a dedicated camera. Something small that you deliberately take along, with a shutter button, a viewfinder and a look of its own.
Yashica announced the Y16 on 18 September. This is a preview: the design and a few features have been revealed, but we will have to wait a little longer for a complete picture of its capabilities.
A design from 1959
The original Yashica Y16 used 16mm film and had a strikingly flat body. That shape returns in the digital version. The name therefore refers to the old camera, rather than an announced focal length for the new lens.
Yashica often draws on its own history. With the FX-D series, the brand also combines references to analogue cameras with digital technology. The Y16 makes that idea smaller and more portable.
Seven colour variants are planned. That adds a personal element: a camera you choose for its appearance and the way you want to take photographs with it.
A viewfinder and a proper flash
What has been confirmed is that the Y16 will have a 12-megapixel image sensor and capture both photographs and video. Yashica also mentions an optical viewfinder with motion detection. Exactly what that detection does remains a matter of guesswork for now.
The built-in xenon flash will offer three levels. That is a notable feature for such a small camera. A xenon flash produces a brief burst of light and opens up possibilities for the direct-flash look associated with many older compact cameras. Its range and the degree of control available also remain to be seen.
The combination of a viewfinder, a dedicated shutter button and a flash should at least make the Y16 different to operate from a phone.
A camera alongside your smartphone
The Y16 fits the interest in small, playful cameras that are easy to carry. Yashica cites its experience with the Funtastic keychain series as an inspiration. Portability and spontaneous photography are also central to the Yashica Tank and Funtastic Keychain Camera.
A camera like this does not have to replace your phone for every shot. You might take it on a night out with friends, a walk or a day of travelling when you feel like photographing with something different. A dedicated device can help keep your attention on taking pictures.
None of that tells us anything about image quality yet. A retro body does not automatically make a photograph better, and twelve megapixels tells only part of the story.
Price and availability
Yashica plans to announce the full specifications, pricing and availability in early October. Under the current schedule, pre-orders will open in October 2026, with the first deliveries following in early November. A Dutch recommended retail price has not yet been announced.
