The Viltrox 75mm f/1.8 AF EVO is a fast portrait lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras with Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, and Sony E mounts. Because of the crop factor, its angle of view is roughly equivalent to 112.5mm on full frame. This puts the lens in classic portrait-telephoto territory, while keeping it slightly wider and more versatile than a longer 90mm lens.
The maximum aperture of f/1.8 makes the lens suitable for portraits with pronounced background blur. The wide aperture also provides extra flexibility in low light, for example when shooting street photography, events, or details in natural light.
Portraits and details
A 75mm lens on APS-C provides a pronounced telephoto effect without requiring you to move extremely far away from your subject. This makes the lens useful for portraits as well as street scenes and details where you want to isolate the subject cleanly from its surroundings.
The minimum focusing distance is 74 centimeters. This lets you work relatively close to your subject and fill the frame with smaller details.
Optics and autofocus
The optical design consists of 11 elements in 9 groups. Viltrox uses two ED elements and two HR elements to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberration. This should deliver a sharp image with accurate color reproduction, even when shooting with the aperture wide open.
The rounded 9-blade diaphragm is designed to produce calm, smooth blur. For autofocus, Viltrox uses a quiet STM stepping motor that is intended to focus quickly and silently. That is useful for portraits and street photography, as well as video recording.
Build and handling
The Viltrox 75mm f/1.8 AF EVO has a metal body and protection against dust and moisture. The lens elements feature a multilayer HD Nano coating and a dirt-repellent protective coating. Firmware updates can be installed directly through the built-in USB-C port on the lens.
Alongside this 75mm lens, Viltrox is also releasing a 90mm f/2.2 AF EVO. That lens offers greater telephoto reach and is equivalent to roughly 135mm on full frame. The 75mm f/1.8 is slightly wider and faster, making it a more versatile option for portraits, street photography, and details.
