The Viltrox AF 90mm F2.2 EVO is a compact telephoto lens for APS-C cameras. On Fujifilm X, Sony E, and Nikon Z cameras, its angle of view is roughly equivalent to that of a 135mm lens on full frame, making it particularly appealing for portraits, detail shots, and subjects you want to photograph from a little farther away. Viltrox announced the lens on June 8, 2026, alongside the 75mm F1.8 EVO.
Its F2.2 maximum aperture lets you create attractive background blur while separating the subject from its surroundings. The lens remains relatively lightweight and affordable, with features including autofocus, a 58mm filter thread, and a weight of around 320 to 345 grams, depending on the source and version.
This makes the 90mm F2.2 EVO a good fit for photographers looking for a portrait lens with plenty of reach, but who do not want to carry a large or expensive full-frame telephoto lens.
At just 320 grams, the lens remains highly portable. Rather than being a lens you only take out for planned portrait sessions, it is also easy to carry in an everyday camera bag.
135mm angle of view on APS-C
A 90mm lens on APS-C provides a fairly narrow angle of view. This creates pronounced spatial compression: backgrounds appear closer to the subject, and distracting elements are more easily excluded from the frame. For portraits, this can produce a calm, flattering effect, especially when you shoot from some distance from the model.
This focal length can also be useful for street photography. You do not have to stand as close to your subject, while still being able to compose a clearly defined frame. This makes the lens suitable for a more observational style of photography, isolating details, faces, or small scenes from busy surroundings.
Fast aperture for smooth backgrounds
The maximum aperture of f/2.2 makes it possible to separate the subject from the background. The lens has a rounded aperture with 9 blades, designed to produce calm, smooth blur. This is an important part of the lens’s character, especially for portraits and detail shots.
The minimum focusing distance is 74 centimeters. This allows you to work relatively close to your subject, which is useful for detail shots, close-ups, and more intimate portraits.
Optical design and autofocus
The optical design consists of 10 elements in 8 groups. Viltrox uses two HR elements and two ED elements to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberration. This should help keep images sharp and clean, even when shooting with the aperture fully open.
For autofocus, Viltrox uses a quiet STM stepping motor. It is designed for fast, accurate focusing as well as video, where a noisy focus motor can quickly become distracting.
Practical controls
Despite its low weight, the Viltrox 90mm f/2.2 AF EVO offers a fairly comprehensive set of controls. The lens has an AF/MF switch, a customizable Fn button, and a CLICK switch that allows the aperture ring to operate steplessly. The latter is especially useful for video creators because aperture adjustments are smoother.
The metal lens mount has a rubber seal to protect against dust and moisture. Firmware updates can be installed through the built-in USB-C port, without a separate dock.
Fujifilm X series
Within the Fujifilm X system, the obvious comparison is the Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR. That lens provides the same telephoto angle of view and a slightly faster aperture, but at 540 grams it is also clearly larger and heavier. By contrast, the Viltrox 90mm f/2.2 AF EVO opts for a more compact and lightweight design, with a similar 135mm-equivalent angle of view for portrait, street, and detail photography.
Viltrox is also releasing a 75mm f/1.8 AF EVO. That lens has a slightly faster aperture and a wider angle of view, making it more suitable as a classic portrait lens. The 90mm f/2.2 EVO, by contrast, is geared toward a stronger telephoto effect and more compression.
