Sony FE 400–800mm F6.3–8 G OSS: Super-Telephoto Zoom for Wildlife and Sports

The Sony FE 400–800mm F6.3–8 G OSS is Sony’s first zoom lens to reach 800 mm. Its enormous range and fast AF make it especially appealing to bird, wildlife, and sports photographers capturing distant subjects.

The internal zoom mechanism minimizes changes in the center of gravity. The lens is also compatible with separately sold 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, extending the maximum focal length to 1600 mm.

Convenient Zoom Ring

The zoom ring turns smoothly and precisely for effortless framing. Its design also helps prevent the focal length from shifting accidentally.

Smooth Bokeh

An eleven-blade circular diaphragm helps create beautifully rounded bokeh with a soft, creamy background at shallow depth of field.

Fast, Precise AF

Two precision linear motors provide fast, accurate autofocus. Tracking keeps pace with the maximum 120 fps burst rate of the Alpha 9 III body. The focus-range switch lets users optimize control for different subject distances.

Suitable for Handheld and Tripod Shooting

Weighing ±2475 g and featuring an internal zoom design, the lens remains well balanced for both handheld and tripod use.

Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps reduce motion blur during handheld shooting. Pair it with an Alpha body with image stabilization for even better results. The lens has a robust, well-balanced design and a fixed tripod foot. On a tripod, the foot rotates quickly from horizontal to vertical orientation for different types of photography.

Control and Reliability

Three focus hold buttons, strategically placed at 90° intervals around the lens body of the FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS, provide easy access from any orientation. In addition, other functions can be assigned to these buttons.

The lens hood has a new design with a lock button and a filter opening, which makes operation even easier.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS has a suggested retail price of approximately €3,000.

Practical Accessories for Super-Telephoto Photography in the Field

A super-telephoto lens such as the Sony FE 400–800mm F6.3–8 G OSS is often used for sports, bird, and wildlife photography in conditions where the weather and environment may not cooperate. Sony is introducing two new accessories designed to protect and transport equipment for this kind of use.

A new rain cover is available for Sony Alpha cameras to protect the camera and lens from rain and snow. It is made of breathable material to help limit condensation and has a transparent window so the viewfinder, screen, and controls remain visible while shooting.

The Sony LCR-ES Raincover Small White has a suggested retail price of € 180.

Sony is also introducing soft carrying cases for super-telephoto lenses. They protect against dust and scratches and are designed for safe transport in the field.

They feature handles and a shoulder strap, while a large zipper and internal security strap make the lens easy to handle securely. The carrying cases are available in three sizes at the following suggested retail prices: large (LCS-LTL) €200, medium (LCS-LTM) €190, and small (LCS-LTS) €180.
