Peter Lindbergh. Untold Stories

Peter Lindbergh. Untold Stories

The artist's book Peter Lindbergh. Untold Stories is the official companion to the monumental exhibition Untold Stories, offering an extensive firsthand look at a personal collection. The exhibition at Kunstpalast Düsseldorf—the first to be curated entirely by Peter Lindbergh himself, shortly before his untimely death—can be seen as an expression of the photographer's unrestrained vision and creativity.

Given complete artistic freedom, Lindbergh assembled an uncompromising collection that cast an unexpected light on his immense body of work. For the prints, he also selected special uncoated photographic paper—a thin sheet with a soft, open surface—as a deliberate aesthetic statement.

Lindbergh's photographs are known around the world and have left an indelible mark on contemporary culture and the history of photography. Through both iconic and previously unseen images, he challenges his own icons and presents intimate moments shared with people who remained close to him for years, including Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Robin Wright, Jessica Chastain, Jeanne Moreau, Naomi Campbell, Charlotte Rampling, and many others.

This XL volume contains more than one hundred and fifty photographs—many of them never published or only briefly in the public eye, and often commissioned by monthly fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Interview, Rolling Stone, W Magazine, or The Wall Street Journal.

An extensive conversation between Lindbergh and Kunstpalast director Felix Krämer, together with a tribute by his close friend Wim Wenders, offers new insight into the choices behind the selection. The result is Lindbergh's intimate, personal statement about his work.

Peter Lindbergh (1944–2019) was a master of his craft who left his mark on the history of photography. Among his achievements was photographing the first American Vogue cover under editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, bringing together for the first time a group of young women who would become the supermodels of the '90s, as well as presenting numerous exhibitions at renowned institutions.

The selection of photographs is complemented by detailed texts about the exhibition's origins and a tribute by Wim Wenders, Lindbergh's close friend and a prominent German filmmaker. He is best known for Paris, Texas (1984), Wings of Desire (1987), Pina (2011), and The Salt of the Earth (2014), a documentary about Sebastião Salgado that he co-directed. His work has influenced many artists, including his close friend, the late Peter Lindbergh.
