The first internationally available Leica smartphone is official: the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi. The device aims to translate Leica’s design language and photographic philosophy into an everyday smartphone experience, with a particular emphasis on control, image character and provenance verification.
Leica has enabled meaningful photography for more than a century, focusing on precision, clarity and respect for the photographic moment. In that spirit, Leica does not see mobile photography as a break with the classic camera, but as a complement: a way to take photographs more often and more directly without compromising image quality.
Design and Grip
The Leitzphone was designed according to Leica’s principle of reduction to the essentials. A black fiberglass back and a precisely knurled metal frame are intended to create a restrained, tactile feel. The red dot marks Leica’s authorship of the design and the overall user experience.
Camera Ring as a Control
A distinctive feature is the mechanical camera ring. It provides the kind of physical control familiar from a camera. The ring is customizable and can be configured for zoom, exposure compensation, ISO and shutter speed. It can also be used to switch between focal lengths and Leica Looks, making operation more deliberate and intuitive.
Triple Camera
At its core is an advanced triple-camera system developed to Leica standards. Leica pairs it with a lens system designed to cover a broad range while pursuing optical precision, with attention to high-contrast edges and reduced chromatic aberration—especially in telephoto images such as cityscapes and portraits.
The main camera uses a large 1-inch sensor with LOFIC technology, designed to increase dynamic range by managing charge at pixel level. It is joined by a periscope telephoto camera with a large 200-megapixel sensor in a compact optical design, with autofocus and optical image stabilization.
Leica UI and Looks
Leica developed the system design and camera interface, including the home screen, camera app and widgets. The camera app includes thirteen Leica Looks, five bokeh simulations and photography-focused widgets. The design prioritizes clarity and attention to the image, with as few distractions as possible.
Essential Mode
A dedicated Leica Essential Mode reinforces this approach. It includes modes that digitally interpret classic Leica aesthetics, such as a color profile inspired by the Leica M9 and a monochrome profile that references analog Leica Monopan film. The aim is to approximate recognizable tonal qualities within a modern imaging pipeline.
Authenticity
In keeping with Leica’s emphasis on photographic integrity, the Leitzphone supports the Content Authenticity Initiative. A security chip can add cryptographically protected metadata to original images as proof of provenance and to protect copyright, in accordance with C2PA standards. This is intended to strengthen transparency and trust in digital images.
