Each year, a young photographer was given an opportunity to establish themselves. The photographers’ deep engagement with their subjects is striking. Their photographs raise questions, intrigue, or wrong-foot the viewer.
Rather than merely depicting a situation or event, they represent a social phenomenon, a mood, and sometimes—in retrospect—the poignancy of time lost.
After Paris, London, and Rome, Amsterdam is the most photographed city in the world. What makes Amsterdam so photogenic? Its people, vitality, noise, and chaos. Small stories, sometimes set against the sweep of history.
The city itself seems to change constantly as well. It is no wonder that Amsterdam looks entirely different through Dolf Toussaint’s camera than through that of Ed van der Elsken.
