In the new year, visual artist Jan van der Horn will shine a new light on the Binnenkant and the Kalkmarkt, opposite the Montelbaanstoren. Jan van der Horn grows his 'Light Jewel' at this historic place in the center of Amsterdam.
Jan van der Horn will create a magical appearance on the canal at the Kalkmarkt with his photography from 1 to 14 January 2024. He lights up his large, colorful photos of pieces of nature, butterflies and fairies on the windowsills of various houses, creating a fairytale atmosphere after sunset.
His photo works are presented in 'light boxes', like a slide, which are placed on windowsills behind the window. Create all photographic light images together The Light Jewel. Jan van der Horn realized this before in Wijk aan Zee, Egmond, Wassenaar, Leiden and Voorschoten.
Magical spheres and fairy tales are an important theme in the work of Jan van der Horn. He tries in his images the magic hour to capture the moment of twilight. In his self-created magical landscapes he has elves and other fairytale figures pose for his Fuji film camera.

Jan van der Horn hopes to inspire as many residents as possible to make their windowsills available for the photographic light images. He starts with a few copies and then slowly expands his photo project.
The first residents he approached immediately responded enthusiastically. "I wish Jan this platform and I think it is wonderful to participate," said a resident. "This place is ideal for such an art project. There is a lot of space and it is also clearly visible from all sides."
She thinks that light boxes can be placed behind many windows: "This is a place where people have good contact with each other. The first residents have already said 'yes' and we as residents will spread the word. Because this will be beautiful, especially because of the color combinations and light intensity in contrast with the historic buildings."
His works will then shine on various windowsills for two weeks, which, especially as a nocturnal exhibition, provides a visual fable spectacle.
