In September 2023, Fujifilm introduced new products for the GFX series: the GFX100 II mirrorless camera, the FUJINON GF55mmF1.7 R WR and two new tilt-shift lenses.
GFX100 II
The GFX100 II, a mirrorless camera with a large-format sensor, features the high-speed 102MP GFX 102MP CMOS II HS sensor and the X-Processor 5. This combination delivers up to twice the sensor readout speed of the GFX100 and GFX100S.
This improves continuous shooting (burst shooting), autofocus and video recording. While the previous model reached 5.0 frames per second, the GFX100 II shoots at 8.0 frames per second.
The GFX100 II also features five-axis image stabilization rated at up to eight stops and can record internally at up to 8K/30p and 4K/60p.
This faster shooting speed makes the camera better suited not only to fashion, commercial and landscape photography, but also to sports, action and news photography.
The GFX100 II is also the first model in the GFX series to feature AI-based subject detection. Deep-learning technology and an improved autofocus algorithm help detect and track animals, birds and vehicles, among other subjects.
Fujifilm GF55mmF1.7 R WR
The Fujifilm GF55mmF1.7 R WR is a weather-resistant prime lens with a focal length of 55mm and a maximum aperture of F1.7. The lens was announced in September 2023 alongside the GFX100 II and offers an angle of view roughly equivalent to that of a 44mm lens in full-frame format.
The combination of a fixed 55mm focal length and a very wide F1.7 aperture provides an angle of view close to that of human vision, resulting in a natural perspective.
This lens uses an optical design consisting of 14 lens elements in 10 groups. These include two ED elements and two aspherical elements that work together to deliver high image resolution and creamy bokeh. Image quality and resolving power are enhanced by the camera's large image sensor.
This new 55mm lens gives photographers a wide range of options, from everyday shooting to professional portraits.
New tilt-shift lenses
The two new tilt-shift lenses for GFX series mirrorless cameras are the GF30mmF5.6 T/S and the GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro.
The GF30mmF5.6 T/S is a wide-angle tilt-shift lens with a focal length of 30mm, providing an angle of view roughly equivalent to that of a 24mm lens in full-frame format. This lens suppresses common issues associated with wide-angle lenses, such as distortion and ghosting, resulting in a high-quality, detailed image.
This lens is especially well suited to landscape photography, where everything in the frame needs to be sharp—from the grass in the foreground to a distant horizon. It is also particularly well suited to architectural photography because the shift function can correct perspective and prevent converging vertical lines.
The GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro is a medium-telephoto tilt-shift macro lens with a focal length of 110mm, equivalent to 87mm in 35mm format. This lens has a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.5x and suppresses several types of aberration, including distortion, lateral chromatic aberration and axial chromatic aberration.
This lens is particularly well suited to commercial photography, still lifes, reproduction work and product photography. The tilt function lets the photographer precisely control the plane of focus, which is especially useful for close-ups and product shots.
Both the GF30mmF5.6 T/S and the GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro offer a tilt function for angling the optical axis and a shift function for moving the optical axis in parallel. This lets the user deliberately manipulate areas of depth of field and perspective.
The lenses also feature rotation mechanisms that allow the tilt and shift directions to be rotated and adjusted relative to each other from perpendicular to parallel.
The Fujifilm GFX100 II mirrorless camera and GF55mm lens were released in September 2023; the GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro and GF30mmF5.6 T/S followed later that year.
