6 Sports Photography Tips for Beginners

6 Sports Photography Tips for Beginners | Fotografie.nl

Exercise is healthy and helps clear your mind of everyday concerns. Many people struggle to fit exercise into their schedules and opt for short, intensive workouts. Even so, traditional sports remain very popular. Sports also make excellent subjects for compelling photos. Because photographing athletes is quite different from portrait or nature photography, here are several sports photography tips.

1. Motion

Sports are dynamic and full of movement, often at high speed. To capture the right moment amid all that fast action, you need to adjust your shutter speed accordingly. The camera sensor then has very little time to collect enough light for the best sports photos, so it is important to set a fast shutter speed. At fast shutter speeds, image stabilization is generally unnecessary.

2. Lighting for Outdoor Sports

When photographing an outdoor sport, you are highly dependent on natural light. On a sunny day, combining a fast shutter speed with ample light should not cause problems. On a cloudy day, however, the fast shutter speed and lack of outdoor light make correct exposure much more challenging.

Fast lenses are useful in those conditions. Outdoor light changes constantly with the weather and is therefore far less consistent. Sports photography requires fairly specialized equipment. That equipment comes at a price, and you need the budget for it. Perhaps the Unibet registration bonus will bring you luck and help you on your way toward purchasing that expensive equipment.

3. Lighting for Indoor Sports

You may not expect it, but setting the exposure correctly often takes more effort for indoor sports. Once you have found the right settings, they will generally work well for any indoor sport. Keep in mind that flash is often prohibited because it distracts the athletes. A fast telephoto zoom lens is indispensable for indoor sports photography.

4. Focusing

In sports photography, speed is everything. You must always be ready to capture the right moment. A fast shutter speed is important, but focusing speed matters as well. You therefore need a camera that can focus very quickly. Being able to adjust focus afterward would be even better. Also consider the quality of a camera’s autofocus. When you track an athlete with your camera, it must continuously refocus as the subject moves.

5. Burst Mode

For sports photography, the camera must also be able to take a rapid sequence of shots; this is called burst mode. Taking photos in quick succession increases your chances of capturing that one exceptional image.

6. Blurred Background

You will usually see sports photographers using a long-focal-length zoom lens. One advantage is that it lets you get closer to the subject without getting in the way. Another is that the shallower depth of field produced by a long focal length makes it easier to isolate the subject against a strongly blurred background. This often creates a less cluttered image and directs more attention to the person in the photo.
If you want to refine your technique, taking a sports photography course is always worthwhile.
