Google Photos, Google’s free app for organizing and editing the photo collection on your smartphone, is available for both Android phones and iPhones. You can also add photographs taken with another camera to Google Photos.
In May 2017, Google Photos had around five hundred million users, who uploaded about 1.2 billion photographs to the service every day. Those figures were expected to rise. Google Photos was popular because it offered free storage for photographs and videos at the time. It also made quick enhancements and sharing with family, friends or social media easy. Google Photos could automatically create enjoyable movies, collages and albums, which users could also make themselves.
Google Photos can also be used in a computer browser. Parts of the app are easy to understand, but it includes many features that are not immediately obvious or straightforward to use.
This booklet examines the many settings in detail, including the available filters and editing options, and explains how to share photographs with others. It also discusses and enabled the Face Recognition feature—which was hidden in the EU at the time—opening up many new possibilities. The aim is to use all of Google Photos’ features, whether quickly creating an animation or assembling a movie, and ultimately to get more enjoyment from the app.
At the time of publication, Google Photos worked in the same way on iOS as it did on Android smart devices. iPhone users could of course choose Apple Photos instead, especially when also using an Apple computer. With Google Photos set to High Quality, users could then store an unlimited number of photographs up to 16MP.
