Marsel van Oosten won the title of International Travel Photographer of the Year 2015 (TPOTY). The Dutch photographer took the top prize in this international photography competition, which received entries from photographers in 110 countries. The Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2015 was 19-year-old Chase Guttman of the United States.
Photographers from 22 other countries also won awards, and the winning images were scheduled to be exhibited for the first time at the Museum of London Docklands in the summer of 2016.
An international jury selected eight of Marsel’s photographs as the best overall entry in the competition. His two black-and-white portfolios were very different, yet both were elegant, beautifully composed and expertly lit. The first portfolio, featuring pelicans, was sharp and graphic, while the second, photographed in Louisiana, was subtle and richly textured.
Dutch photographer Jasper Doest won an award in the Water category with a single photograph. That year, TPOTY introduced its first award for the best photograph taken with a mobile phone. Edgard de Bono of Italy won it with an image made in Benin on an iPhone 5S.
Marsel van Oosten’s work is recognizable for its graphic approach to composition, a direct result of his previous career as an art director. In his work, he strives to simplify and eliminate distractions. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
His images have been shown in galleries and museums, and he contributes regularly to National Geographic Magazine. He won the overall Nature Photographer of the Year title at the IPA twice in succession and received distinctions from TPOTY and Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
Together with his wife, Daniella, he runs Squiver, a company specializing in nature and landscape photography that organizes tours and workshops for small groups of all skill levels at spectacular locations around the world.
