How Photographers Can Work More Safely Online with a VPN
A VPN, or virtual private network, routes your data through an encrypted tunnel. This makes intercepted traffic much harder to read. The connection runs through an external server, often in another country. When you connect to that server, websites see the server’s IP address instead of your own, making your connection less directly traceable to you.
Public networks should not be assumed to be secure. Data on them is not always encrypted by the network itself, and other users may try to intercept it. There is also no guarantee that a network named after a roadside restaurant actually belongs to that restaurant; cybercriminals can create convincing fake networks to steal valuable data.
Uploading a photo over a public network may seem convenient, but it can create significant privacy and security risks for the photographer—not to mention the risk that the image files themselves could be stolen.
