In gratitude for their pleasant collaboration, American photographer Steve McCurry donated three photographs to Museum Helmond. The photographs, shown with 135 other large-format color images through September 10 at Kunsthal in the exhibition Photographs from the East, were additions to the People and Work collection.
The three photographs McCurry donated to the museum included a colorful portrait of a coal miner from Pul-i-Kumri, Afghanistan, and fishermen on stilts off Sri Lanka’s southern coast. They were welcome additions to the museum’s People and Work collection.
This international art centered on working people includes compelling images of working conditions, social struggle, cityscapes and landscapes.
McCurry became world-famous for his striking portrait of the green-eyed Afghan girl that appeared on the cover of National Geographic in 1985. The portrait was shown at Kunsthal through September 10 alongside 137 large-format color photographs from 1979–2016, most of them taken in India and Afghanistan.
McCurry (USA, 1950) is distinguished by his personal approach to people. During his travels, he repeatedly captures the richness of local color and the play of light. In India, he learned to watch and wait for the right moment: “If you wait, people forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view.”
