Sony has announced two additions to its growing range of full-frame lenses for the E-mount camera system.
The newcomers are the FE 16–35 mm constant F2.8 GM wide-angle zoom lens (model SEL1635GM) and the FE 12–24 mm constant F4 G ultra-wide-angle lens (model SEL1224G). The SEL1635GM combines the high resolution and bokeh of the G Master series with a 16–35 mm focal-length range, making it suitable for landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, and more. The SEL1224G offers the widest angle of view among Sony’s FE lenses and opens up a new perspective.
The new wide-angle zoom lens with a constant F2.8 aperture pairs perfectly with the renowned FE 24–70 mm F2.8 GM and FE 70–200 mm F2.8 GM OSS, completing Sony’s range of large-aperture F2.8 zoom lenses. The Sony FE 16–35 mm F2.8 GM is the first G Master wide-angle zoom model and is therefore ideal for a wide variety of shooting situations—landscapes, architecture, close-ups, sports, action, and much more. Its light, compact design also makes it highly portable and easy to use.
The front XA element in the SEL1635GM is the largest XA element ever made and ensures outstanding quality. The lens also uses two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberration and optimize resolution. Sony’s original Nano AR Coating suppresses internal reflections to ensure excellent image contrast and beautiful clarity.
Its 11 aperture blades create an almost perfectly circular aperture. Together with the XA element mentioned above, this keeps subjects in sharp focus while the background fades into smooth bokeh. The lens also has two DDSSMs (Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motors) that form a floating focusing system, making autofocus fast, quiet, and accurate.
The new compact FE 12–24 mm F4 G ultra-wide-angle zoom lens weighs just 566 g. This full-frame lens for the E-mount camera system offered Sony’s widest angle of view at the time. It provides a dynamic perspective for landscape, architectural, and interior photography and is suitable for both stills and movies.
The optical design includes four aspherical elements that deliver good corner-to-corner sharpness and high resolution. It also incorporates three ED glass elements and one Super ED glass element, as well as Nano AR Coating. Together, these features minimize chromatic aberration across the entire image.
The SEL1224G includes a DDSSM (Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor) for fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus. It also offers a customizable focus-hold button and a focus-mode switch.
Pricing and availability
The SEL1635GM (16–35 mm F2.8) became available in August 2017 at an approximate price of €2,700. The SEL1224G (12–24 mm F4 G) became available in July 2017 at an approximate price of €2,000 .
