For six years, Sebastião Salgado traveled through the Brazilian Amazon, photographing the unparalleled beauty of this extraordinary region: the rainforest, the rivers, the mountains, the people who live there.
In the book’s foreword, Salgado writes: “For me, it is the final frontier, a mysterious universe of its own where the immense power of nature can be felt as nowhere else on Earth. The forest that stretches into infinity contains a tenth of all living plant and animal species; it is the world’s largest single natural laboratory.”
Salgado visited twelve Indigenous peoples living in small communities across the world's largest tropical rainforest. He documented the daily lives of the Yanomami, Asháninka, Yawanawá, Suruwahá, Zo'é, Kuikuro, Waurá, Kamayurá, Korubo, Marubo, Awá, and Macuxi—their close family ties, hunting and fishing, ways of preparing and sharing meals, remarkable talent for painting their faces and bodies, the role of their shamans, and their dances and rituals.
Sebastiao Salgado dedicated this book to the Indigenous peoples of the Brazilian Amazon: “My wish, with all my heart, with all my energy, with all the passion I possess, is that fifty years from now this book will not be a record of a lost world. Amazônia must live on.”
Sebastiao Salgado began his career as a professional photographer in Paris in 1973 and later worked with the Sygma, Gamma, and Magnum Photos agencies. In 1994, he and his wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado Amazonas Images, founded what is now their studio, where he works exclusively. Salgado's photographic projects have appeared in numerous exhibitions and books, including Sahel. L'Homme en détresse (1986), Other Americas (1986), Workers (1993), Terra (1997), Migrations (2000), The Children (2000), Africa(2007),Genesis(2013), The Scent of a Dream (2015), Kuwait. A Desert on Fire (2016) and Gold (2019).
Lélia Wanick Salgado studied architecture and urban planning in Paris. Her interest in photography began in 1970. In the eighties, she began developing and designing most of Sebastião Salgado's photo books and all exhibitions of his work. She directed Amazonas Images and their Paris studio from 1994 until 2017.
