Samyang is expanding its compact zoom line with the AF 60-180mm F2.8 FE, a telephoto zoom for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras. The lens was developed in collaboration with Schneider-Kreuznach and is the third model in the brand’s compact F2.8 line. Together with the previously released AF 14-24mm F2.8 FE and AF 24-60mm F2.8 FE, it creates a remarkably lightweight zoom set covering 14 to 180 mm.
Samyang is therefore positioning this lens not only as a standalone telephoto zoom, but primarily as part of a complete system. For photographers and videographers who like working with a constant F2.8 aperture but do not want to carry a heavy bag of traditional professional zooms, that is an appealing concept.
Not a Classic 70-200mm, but Pleasantly Light
The AF 60-180mm F2.8 FE is clearly related to the familiar class of 70-200mm F2.8 lenses, but takes a slightly different approach. You give up 20 mm at the long end, but gain a little more room at the short end. That can be especially useful for portraits, reportage, detail shots, and events: 60 mm feels slightly less tight than 70 mm, while 180 mm still provides ample telephoto reach for subject isolation and compression.
The biggest difference, however, is the weight. The lens weighs just 730 grams, making it considerably lighter than most traditional 70-200mm F2.8 lenses. Its length ranges from 149 mm at its shortest setting to 174,4 mm at the telephoto end. That does not make it tiny, but it is surprisingly portable for a telephoto zoom with a constant F2.8 aperture.
For anyone who often shoots handheld, photographs while traveling, or works long days on video productions, that is no small detail. Less weight simply means you are more likely to take the lens with you. Ultimately, that matters more than a specification on paper.
F2.8 Throughout the Zoom Range
The constant F2.8 aperture is a major part of the appeal. In low light, it lets you keep using practical shutter speeds for longer, while the wide aperture produces smooth background blur in portraits. A constant aperture is also useful for video because exposure remains consistent while zooming.
Optically, the lens consists of 17 elements in 14 groups, including one HR element, seven ED elements, and two aspherical elements. This design is intended to keep chromatic aberrations and other optical flaws under control. LK Samyang also uses a floating focus system to maintain stable image quality at short focusing distances.
That close-up capability is a useful extra. With a maximum magnification of 1:3.8, this is not a true macro lens, but it does let you get closer to subjects than you might expect from a telephoto zoom. Think of details at a wedding, product shots, food, flowers, or small textures encountered while traveling.
Designed with Video in Mind
For autofocus, LK Samyang uses a Linear Stepping Motor. It is designed to focus quickly, quietly, and accurately for both photography and video. That suits the lens’s broader target audience: not only photographers, but also hybrid creators who want to work with one compact set.
The lens has an AF/MF switch and a Zoom Lock function. The latter prevents the lens from extending unintentionally during transport. The construction is also weather-sealed, which is useful for anyone who does not work exclusively in good weather. The 77mm filter size is practical because many photographers working in this class already own filters in that size.
A Compact Zoom Trio from 14 to 180 mm
With this telephoto zoom, Samyang’s compact F2.8 series is complete for now. The AF 14-24mm F2.8 FE weighs 445 grams, the AF 24-60mm F2.8 FE weighs 494 grams, and this AF 60-180mm F2.8 FE weighs 730 grams. Together, they cover a range from 14 to 180 mm while keeping the total weight remarkably low for three fast zoom lenses.
LK Samyang is clearly targeting creators who want the flexibility of a professional zoom set without automatically accepting its usual size and weight. For Sony users who travel frequently, shoot video, or work handheld for long periods, this could be an attractive combination.
The Samyang AF 60-180mm F2.8 FE will be available from the end of July. The suggested retail price is € 999,- including VAT.
