Ralph Gibson travels a lot and mainly works on inspiring series, combined with visual dreams in both monochrome and color. The titles The Somnambulist, Déjà-Vu, Days at Sea and Chiaroscuro underline the special poetic sensitivity that characterizes his work.
He started with Dorothea Lange in 1960, settled in New York in 1967 and was soon seen in the same light as people like Larry Clark and Diane Arbus.
The photos and series can of course speak for themselves, but for Gibson there is a philosophy behind the image, and he presents his thesis in the accompanying short texts. He comes closer to things and meditates on them in a way that only the silence of the image can match.

Ralph Gibson began taking photographs while serving in the US Navy in the 50s and later assisted Dorothea Lange and Robert Frank before founding his own studio in New York. Gibson received grants from the NEA and Guggenheim and was appointed Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2002.
