Born in Germany, Vincent Peters began his career taking photographs while traveling through Thailand in the 1980s. The photographs were subsequently published by GEO Magazine. Vincent moved to New York in 1989 and found work as a photographer’s assistant. He decided, however, to pursue his own creative vision. His work focused more on photography as fine art and was exhibited widely throughout Europe and published in numerous fine-art magazines. From 1990 onward, Vincent Peters returned to the world of fashion and celebrity photography. At the time of this article, he lived in Paris and Ibiza.
His photographs have appeared in Vogue, Numéro, ELLE, GQ, Arena, Dazed and Confused, and The Face. His clients have included Celine, Bottega Veneta, Dunhill, Hermès, Diesel, Philips, Nike, Adidas, Plein Sud, Armani, Joop, Miu Miu, Samsonite, Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Guerlain, Lancôme, Sonia Rykiel, and Rochas.
His unmistakable style of sensitive, classical photography is well suited to celebrity, fashion, and advertising work. With minimal means, he creates dramatic images that look like stills from an imaginary film. Each photograph makes you feel as though you are part of a story.
Peters’s first photo book, The Light Between Us, was published in 2014 and featured his best photographs of actors, models, and musicians. In Personal, he turned to his favorite subject: women. We see film stars as never before; Penélope Cruz, Linda Evangelista, and Irina Shayk are just a few of the prominent women featured.
Most of the photographs Vincent Peters personally selected for this book had never been published before. Alongside his portraits are nudes that demonstrate how his masterful use of light creates exceptionally sensual photographs. His technique enables him to make mysterious images of female beauty that are sure to draw us in. Since age 17, Vincent Peters has photographed with a Mamiya RZ medium-format camera and has refused to switch to digital photography.
