Panasonic Lumix S 20mm f/2.5: wide view, light weight

Panasonic Lumix S 20mm f/2.5: compact wide-angle lens

At 20mm, you can fit a lot into the frame: a wide street, a small interior or a landscape with a strong foreground. The new Panasonic Lumix S 20mm f/2.5 does it with a lens that weighs just 142 grams. This compact wide-angle prime for full-frame L-mount cameras is made to travel light.

The lens is about 4.1 centimetres long. Paired with a small camera such as the Panasonic Lumix S9, it makes for an unobtrusive setup. That is welcome on a city trip when you carry your camera all day.

More room in the frame

You will notice the difference between 20mm and the usual 24mm wide end of a standard zoom most when you cannot step back. In a narrow street or small room, you can include a little more of your surroundings.

That wide field of view calls for some care. Tilt the camera upwards and buildings will appear to lean towards each other. For portraits, it is best to keep faces away from the very edges of the frame.

If you want that expansive view together with the flexibility of a zoom, the Sigma 20–60mm F2.8–4 is another L-mount option. The Panasonic sticks to a single focal length and a much smaller design.

Get close to your foreground

The minimum focusing distance is 18 centimetres, measured from the sensor. That lets you place a flower, a dish or another detail prominently in the foreground while keeping the surroundings in view.

With a maximum magnification of 0.15×, this is not a macro lens. Its appeal lies in combining a close subject with a wide view. The f/2.5 maximum aperture also gives you some scope to soften the background, especially when you are close to your subject.

Made for video too

Panasonic promises fast, quiet autofocus and reduced focus breathing, the change in angle of view as the lens focuses. A customizable function button and control ring provide access to extra features on compatible Lumix cameras. The available settings depend on the camera body and firmware.

The lens has no optical image stabilization, so you will need to rely on your camera's stabilization features. Its body is built to resist dust and splashes, while a fluorine coating helps keep the front element clean.

Price and availability

The Panasonic Lumix S 20mm f/2.5 L-mount lens costs €499 and is expected to become available in October 2026.

For photographers who often shoot wide, the size is the main attraction. You give up the flexibility of a zoom, but gain a lens that adds hardly any weight. Sometimes that is exactly what makes you take your camera along.
