NL photographers on Open shortlist of SWPA 2025

The category winners Open competition of the Sony World Photography Awards 2025

The Sony World Photography Awards has announced the ten category winners and shortlisted photographers of the 2025 Open competition. The four Dutch photographers Svetlana Jovanovic, Max van Son, Pati John and Britt Knierim have secured a place on the various shortlists.

The Open competition concerns the ability of an individual photo to capture a unique moment and evoke a broader story. Entrants were invited to submit their strongest single images of 2024 and the winners and shortlists represent some of the most compelling images of the past year.

This year, more than 419,000 images from more than 200 countries and territories were submitted to the Sony World Photography Awards.

Britt Knierim wins a prize in the Travel category for the photo A train in Sri Lanka. Max van Son wins in the Architecture category with a photo of part of the entrance hall of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This image illustrates the harmonious interplay of lines, shapes and light in relation to the large size of the monumental space and illustrates the insignificance of a person below. Pati John also wins in the Architecture category.

Svetlana Jovanovic has been shortlisted in the Portrait category with a portrait as part of the photographer's ongoing project, Otherness, which focuses on the bond between identical twins. Robin and Lisa are identical twins from the Netherlands and the photo was taken in The Hague, in the beach and dune area.

Selected winning images and images on the shortlist were shown as part of the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House from April 17 to May 5, 2025, before traveling to other locations.
