The World Photography Organisation announced the category winners and shortlisted photographers in the Open competition of the 2024 Sony World Photography Awards. Dutch photographer Rob Blanken won the Creative category, while Sarah Wouters was shortlisted in the Motion category.
More than 395,000 images from over 220 countries and territories were entered in the Sony World Photography Awards that year.
Rob Blanken won the prize for a macro photograph of crystals of the amino acids beta-alanine, L-glutamine and glycine, revealing the remarkable colors and textures of these complex structures. The image was made at 5x magnification using polarizing filters.
The winners of the Student, Youth, Open and Professional competitions at the 2024 Sony World Photography Awards were announced on April 18. Winning and shortlisted photographs were shown at Somerset House from April 19 to May 6, 2024.
The exhibition subsequently continued to other locations.
Sarah Wouters photographed running horses during a trip to Cappadocia, Turkey. She visited the Göreme Valley early in the morning to photograph hot-air balloons taking off near the stables.
The ten Open category winners received Sony digital-imaging equipment and competed for the prestigious Open Photographer of the Yeartitle and a $5,000 (USD) prize.
