Nikon Zf gets creative firmware update with film grain

Nikon Zf firmware 3.00: film grain and new creative functions

Nikon has released firmware version 3.00 for the Zf, an update that capitalizes on the retro character of the camera. Instead of just technical optimizations, Nikon adds features that will especially appeal to creative photographers and video makers.

The most eye-catching addition to the Nikon Zf is the new Film Grain function. This allows photos and videos to be provided with a film-like grain structure directly in the camera. Users can adjust both the intensity and size of the grain, with the structure varying subtly from shot to shot. In combination with Picture Controls and image recipes, this creates an analogue appearance without post-processing.

In addition to this creative expansion, the update also includes various improvements in operation and workflow. For example, additional options have been added for silent photography and video recording, new assignment options for buttons and command dials have been added, and support for Nikon Imaging Cloud has been further expanded. This makes it easier to import image recipes and automatically synchronize images.

Small but noticeable refinements have also been made in the field of autofocus and display. The update also contains a large number of bug fixes and stability improvements that contribute to smoother operation of the camera in practice.

What is the use of this in practice?

For Zf users who like to use JPEG or HEIF straight from the camera, the Film Grain function is especially interesting. You can now consciously choose an analog film look without being dependent on post-processing in software.

Street and reportage photographers benefit from:

  • more creative control in-camera
  • faster operation via additional button and command-dial assignments
  • consistent style through image recipes

Creators gain additional control over display, focus and audio, which makes the Nikon Zf more versatile for hybrid use.

If you mainly use the Zf as a classic full-frame camera without interest in cinematic looks or cloud functionality, less will change. However, for those who consciously embrace the retro concept of the Zf, firmware 3.00 is a clear substantive step forward.
