Nikon Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S

Nikon Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S super-telephoto lens

The Nikkor Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S is a professional super-telephoto lens for Nikon Z cameras. With a fixed focal length of 600mm, a fast f/4 aperture and a built-in 1.4x teleconverter, this lens is aimed primarily at sports, wildlife and nature photographers who need substantial reach without repeatedly changing lenses or using a separate converter.

With the teleconverter engaged, the lens becomes an 840mm f/5.6 lens. This makes it useful in situations where the subject remains far away, such as birds, wild animals, athletics, motorsport or field sports.

600mm and 840mm in one lens

The main difference compared with a conventional 600mm lens is the built-in 1.4x teleconverter. It can be activated with a switch without removing the lens from the camera, taking you from 600mm f/4 to 840mm f/5.6.

This is especially practical when the subject moves quickly or there is no time to change accessories. Think of a bird that suddenly comes closer, a sporting moment that happens only once or an animal that is just beyond the ideal range.

For sports, wildlife and nature

The Nikkor Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S is designed for photographers working in demanding conditions. In sports photography, speed, tracking and reliability matter. Wildlife and bird photography, by contrast, often revolve around distance, silence and patience.

The long reach allows subjects to fill the frame without the photographer having to get close. This is not only convenient, but sometimes necessary to avoid disturbing animals or to remain behind the barriers at sporting events.

Autofocus, stabilization and controls

Autofocus is driven by Nikon’s Silky Swift focusing system. It is designed to focus quickly and quietly, with accurate subject detection and tracking. That is essential for a lens in this class: small focusing errors are immediately noticeable at 600mm or 840mm.

The built-in vibration reduction provides up to 5.5 stops of compensation, depending on the camera and settings used. This helps when shooting handheld or from a monopod, although a lens of this size is of course intended primarily for serious work on the sidelines, in nature or from a tripod.

The balance has been optimized accordingly. The centre of gravity is located around the tripod mount, making the lens feel more stable and less likely to pull forward. At 3260 grams, it is relatively portable for a 600mm f/4 lens with a built-in teleconverter, but it remains unmistakably professional equipment.

Matthieu van Vliet, General Manager SAS: “Just like its sibling (the 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S), the professional Nikon Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S always gets the shot, whatever happens.”

Optical quality and protection

In this telephoto lens, Nikon uses Meso Amorphous Coat, among other technologies, to reduce ghosting and flare. This is particularly useful in difficult lighting conditions, such as backlit scenes or compositions containing multiple light sources.

The lens is also weather-sealed. That suits its intended use: sports fields, nature reserves, rain, dust and changing conditions. For photographers who often work outdoors, this is at least as important as the specifications on paper.

Price and availability

The Nikon Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S is available at a suggested retail price of €16,249 and is clearly aimed at professional sports, wildlife and nature photographers.
