‘My favorite photograph is one from 1997, of a bodybuilder, taken at the world-famous Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, United States. An unintentional lucky shot, to be honest. I was walking along the beach, saw this scene, quickly pressed the shutter, and kept walking. For years, the negative lay forgotten in a drawer. Then I saw a photograph by war photographer James Nachtwey: a shirtless prisoner photographed from above, with an impressive muscular build. Suddenly I saw the beauty of my own photograph: this man with a body like a landscape, a very old-fashioned cassette recorder—the forerunner of the iPod—clipped to his checked trousers, and that white wire providing a pleasing contrast. I dusted off the photograph and printed it for the first time in 2005. Art Unlimited loved it and put it into production as a postcard.’
