What is unique about black-and-white urban photography? It gives viewers a sense of history or shows a city from a special perspective. Serge Ramelli’s photography does both—and even more. Drawing on his experience as a film director, he actively seeks out locations that evoke a certain tension.

The New York skyline and its typical street scenes are presented as a stage where nothing happens and nothing needs to happen, yet they create the impression that you are watching a scene from a feature film. With New York as the subject, little else is needed.

Although comparable to Ansel Adams in technique and expression, Serge Ramelli is a contemporary photographer in the truest sense, constantly experimenting with new technical possibilities.

After Paris, New York was Serge Ramelli’s first choice for his photographic diptych of contemporary cityscapes, and it is certainly no coincidence that he chose this enormous city as the subject of his second book. How could a film lover not pay tribute to this city? After more than a century of legendary cinema, New York proved to be the ideal location.

Serge Ramelli continually searches for spectacular lighting, both natural and artificial, which makes New York—with its giant advertisements and glaring signs—the perfect city to serve as his backdrop.
