The World Photography Organisation announced the finalists and shortlisted photographers for the Professional competition of the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards. Dutch photographer Peter Eleveld was among the finalists in the Still Life. The 2021 Photographer of the Year was selected from the group of Professional finalists.
More than 330,000 images from 220 countries were entered across the four competitions of the 2021 Awards, and more than 145,000 images were entered in the ten categories of the Professional competition—the highest number of entries to date.
Peter Eleveld: “For this project, I used ordinary objects such as glassware, fruit, and flowers, and applied the wet-plate collodion process to turn them into something extraordinary. Once I had found my subject, I began imagining how it would look in print. This particular process requires a great deal of patience and careful planning of the composition, lighting, and exposure times.
The hard work pays off when everything finally comes together in one unique, magical moment as you watch the photograph slowly develop before your eyes. It does not always happen, but when it does, you are left with a unique image (plate).”
That year, the competition introduced a new Portfolio category, in which photographers could submit individual images featuring different subjects while maintaining a recognizable style and level of technical skill throughout.
The winners of the Student, Youth, Open, and Professional competitions of the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards were announced on April 15 through the World Photography Organisation’s digital and video platforms.
