Dutch photographer Michael Echteld of Leiden was named the winner of the Netherlands National Award, part of the prestigious 2015 Sony World Photography Awards.

Echteld’s winning image Looking up the Torre de Mangia had previously been selected as the second-best photograph in the Open Architecture category of the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards.

Echteld said of his photograph: “This photo was taken in the courtyard of the Palazzo Pubblico (City Hall) in Siena, Italy. Looking straight up, the patterns and symmetry in the architecture are beautifully emphasized. The asymmetrical position of the Torre del Mangia (1344) breaks the symmetry. Exposing this photograph was difficult. Five different exposures were combined and balanced in post-processing.”

Echteld, a senior health-care researcher originally from Paramaribo, won a Sony Alpha 711 camera. He was to be flown to the awards ceremony in London on April 23, where his photograph was scheduled to be shown at Somerset House from April 24 through May 10 as part of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition.

Theo de Witte took second place among the Dutch finalists, while Lione Bakker took third.

Theo de Witte’s Image:

I came up with this image myself. I first made a sketch and then photographed three components I could use. I decided to shoot from above with raking light.

The Three Components:

  • In a city square, two boys pull on a slat with ropes.
  • The grass photographed from a mast in a meadow.
  • Tree (with shadow).
