What makes your living environment more than just a particular space? Is it the presence of people, the architecture, or the atmosphere? At the request of Het Oversticht, photographer Eddo Hartmann photographed meaningful places in the region, showing what our surroundings can do to us.
In 1925, one hundred years ago, Het Oversticht was founded as a provincial association actively concerned with the beauty of Overijssel. Today, the organization helps provinces, municipalities, and other stakeholders with subjects such as environmental quality, heritage, and sustainability.
The identity of a place is always central to this work. How do you design a residential neighborhood that will remain livable for future generations? What is needed to continue living on the farmstead where you grew up?
To mark its centennial, photographer Eddo Hartmann visited meaningful places in Het Oversticht’s area of work at the organization’s request. Across Overijssel, Drenthe, Flevoland, and Elburg in Gelderland, he photographed 32 locations—one in each municipality.
These were not iconic monuments or tourist attractions, but places of personal value to someone. Hartmann observed closely, absorbed the atmosphere, and captured what often remains invisible: the soul of the place.
The swimmer who faithfully braves the cold water every week, someone visiting the mosque early in the morning, an enthusiast combing through a thrift store in search of that one special object. The photo book Meer dan een plek shows what a century of commitment to the living environment means. It is an ode to both predictable and unexpected places that affect us.
Eddo Hartmann is a Dutch photographer and educator known for his balanced visual language and socially engaged projects. After studying at the Royal Academy of Art, he began his career in commercial and editorial photography. His focus soon shifted to long-term documentary projects centered on the relationship between people and their surroundings.
