Laowa has a new option for macro photographers: the 180mm f/4.5 1.5x Ultra Macro. This lens not only offers high magnification, but even provides autofocus for Canon EF, Sony FE and Nikon Z users.
Like Laowa’s other macro lenses, this model is part of the APO series, with an apochromatic design that greatly reduces chromatic aberration and other optical flaws. This delivers high image quality and sharp results.
At a working distance of 30 centimeters, a maximum magnification of 1.5x is already possible. This lets you keep more distance from your subject, which is useful for subjects such as insect photography. It also makes it less likely that your subject will end up in your own shadow.
Despite its 180mm focal length, the lens is remarkably light and compact, especially compared with alternatives from other brands. This makes it an appealing option for photographers who want the benefits of a telephoto macro lens without carrying much extra weight.
The autofocus function works from 1.5 meters, making the lens well suited to portraits and landscapes as well. In the macro range, focusing is manual, while the aperture remains electronically controlled. Fully manual versions are also available for Canon RF and L-Mount, as Laowa users have come to expect.
