How to: Choose a Profile for Your RAW Photos
When you shoot a photo in RAW format and open it in Camera Raw, Adobe uses the Adobe Color profile by default as the basis for every edit you make afterward. Adobe Color, however, provides a rather restrained and not especially exciting rendering of your camera’s original image.
Fortunately, you do not have to settle for Adobe’s uninspiring default: you can choose a more vibrant, higher-contrast starting point simply by selecting another RAW profile from the Profile drop-down list in the Edit panel.
I prefer the 'Adobe Landscape' profile. Whether I'm importing photos of landscapes, travel, cities, or street scenes, this profile usually provides the best starting point for my adjustments. Every now and then I notice that 'Adobe Vivid' delivers slightly better results and in those situations I choose that. For portrait photos I often opt for the deliberately muted look of 'Adobe Portrait'.
If you also want to make a strong start with your RAW images, but you're longing for something with even more impact, consider selecting one of the camera-specific profiles that mimic the photo styles that would have been available had you shot in JPEG mode.
To find these specific profiles, click on the icon with the three rectangles and a magnifying glass, which you will find next to the 'Profile' drop-down list. If the Adobe Raw category appears automatically, close it and open the 'Camera Matching' category instead.
Hover over a thumbnail to preview the profile’s effect on your photo. To apply it and make it your new starting point, simply click it (see the image at bottom right). That gives you a quick and effective start!
