Unparalleled in scope, this survey of visionary photographer Helmut Newton (1920–2004) spans more than five decades and reached millions through publication in magazines such as Vogue and Elle. His body of work transcended genres and brought elegance, style, and voyeurism to fashion, portrait, and glamour photography.

After mastering the art of fashion photography early in his career, Newton consistently took his shoots beyond standard practice, blurring the line between reality and illusion. Newton’s unmistakable aesthetic permeates every aspect of his work, particularly fashion, portrait, and nude photography.

Women take center stage, with models including Catherine Deneuve, Liz Taylor, and Charlotte Rampling. Newton’s fashion photography goes beyond traditional narrative approaches: it is infused not only with luxurious elegance and subtle seduction, but also with cultural references and a surprising sense of humor.

In the 1990s, Newton photographed for the German, American, Italian, French, and Russian editions of Vogue, primarily in and around Monte Carlo, where he had lived since 1981. Transforming locations such as his own garage into high-contrast or strikingly minimalist theatrical stages, Newton often portrayed the eccentric lives of the beautiful and wealthy—filled with eroticism and elegance—in unconventional scenarios.

He both employed and questioned visual clichés, sometimes tinged with self-deprecation or mockery, but always full of empathy.
