In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day on March 8, Hasselblad once again spotlighted a select and diverse group of female photographers in the fourth year of Hasselblad Heroines . Since the series launched in 2019, women from around the world have been recognized for their creativity and dedication to the craft.
That year’s group consisted of eight remarkable women working across a wide range of genres, including travel, architecture, nature, product, food and beverage, wedding, conceptual fine art, and portrait photography. These visual artists created images across several continents and had already gained recognition through galleries, billboards, print, and online platforms.
From March 2 through April, Hasselblad featured one Heroine each week across its channels, sharing their experiences, challenges, tips, sources of inspiration, and paths to achievement.
The Hasselblad Heroines 2022 lineup included the following eight photographers:
- Lola Akinmade Åkerström (Stockholm, Sweden) — an award-winning storyteller, travel photographer, and international bestselling author who has traveled to more than seventy countries to document cultural and environmental portraits;
- Stephanie Blomkamp (Cape Town, South Africa) — a photographer specializing in surreal portraiture and conceptual photography, and the founder and editor of Oath, a new publication dedicated to African photography;
- Gigi Chung (San Francisco, USA) — a fine-art photographer and winner of several international photography competitions whose work focuses on studio abstraction and choreographed juxtapositions of urban spaces;
- Lisa Devlin (Brighton, UK) — a wedding and editorial photographer whose relaxed style gracefully captures couples’ passion and emotion on their special day;
- Aline Smithson (Los Angeles, USA) — an educator, founder, and editor of the daily photography publication Lenscratch, as well as a photographic artist who works exclusively with film and whose conceptual fine art and portrait photography has been exhibited in galleries around the world;
- Annie Spratt (New Forest National Park, UK) — a nature photographer and an image manager and curator at Unsplash, while raising a family of eight children;
- Karen Thomas (London, UK) — the first food and beverage photographer featured by Hasselblad Heroines, whose appetizing images of food and drinks have appeared on billboards, packaging, and in editorial and branded advertising campaigns;
- Lydia Winters (Stockholm, Sweden) — a product photographer, influencer, and chief storyteller at Mojang Studios, the creators of Minecraft, who photographs luxury watches with an elegant style.
