In 2019, exactly 55 years after The Beatles visited Amsterdam, the anniversary was marked by an exhibition opening in late January at 5&33 Gallery in Amsterdam’s art’otel, titled Unseen Beatles.
This exclusive series of Beatles photographs is part of one of the world’s largest private collections of Beatles images. Robert Whitaker made the photographs between 1964 and 1966. The British pop photographer traveled with the legendary band for two years and served as the Fab Four’s in-house photographer. Because the collection was for sale, the exhibition was likely the last opportunity to see it intact.
The year 1964 brought not only the famous canal tour through Amsterdam and the performance in Blokker, but also the arrival of pop photographer Robert Whitaker. He followed The Beatles around the world for two years, making unique images during performances, on the road, and in their free time. He also photographed John Lennon with his then-wife Cynthia and their son Julian.
Whitaker also created distinctive portraits, organized playful photo shoots, and produced publicity material, including the famous cover for the album Yesterday and Today. He also photographed The Beatles extensively in his studio on King’s Road, where Eric Clapton also had a studio.
More Than a Hundred Photographs
Collection owner Ivo de Lange knew Whitaker personally and owns more than a hundred photographs. All the works were personally signed by the photographer, who died in 2011. One highlight shows The Beatles breaking sheets of Styrofoam. The photograph is framed in the same material, and the band members extinguished their cigarettes in it; the cigarette butts remain embedded. Other striking images include The Butcher and All British Boy, a portrait of John Lennon with a British flag painted on his face.
Willem Verhoeven, general manager of art’otel Amsterdam and 5&33 Gallery, was especially enthusiastic about the Unseen Beatles exhibition: “It is a unique collection in a unique location. Exactly 55 years after their only visit, The Beatles can be seen in Amsterdam again, thanks to this remarkable collection.”

Because the collection was for sale, the exhibition was probably the last chance to see Unseen Beatles. De Lange parted with the photographs reluctantly. “It is a remarkable historical snapshot of one of the world’s most famous bands and an important period in pop history. Whitaker was a brilliant photographer, and his work reveals the many sides of John, Paul, George, and Ringo. He was the only photographer who could get so close to The Beatles and was sometimes even part of their private lives. That made these photographs very special and exclusive, yet he never capitalized on them. He forgot to make himself famous.”
After The Beatles stopped touring in 1966, their collaboration with Whitaker ended. In the years that followed, he photographed other artists, including Salvador Dalí and Mick Jagger. He later worked as a war photographer in Vietnam and Cambodia, among other places. In the seventies, he left photography altogether and became a farmer in Sussex, England.
The exhibition Unseen Beatles was on view for six weeks from January 24 at 5&33 Gallery in Amsterdam’s art’otel.
