Elliott Erwitt is recognized worldwide for his candid and often ironic black-and-white images of everyday life.

He has been a member of the Magnum photo agency since 1953. He said of photography: “To me, photography is an art of observation, it’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”

The exhibition at Somerset House also featured his books, archival prints, favorite photographs and a selection of his films.

The Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award is presented annually by the Sony World Photography Awards. The previous year, it went to Bruce Davidson.
