The De Zilveren Camera Foundation has announced that Eddy van Wessel has won the 2019 Canon Zilveren Camera with his series Het Laatste Bolwerk.
Photographer Eddy van Wessel (1965) works in various conflict and disaster zones. His photographs are published in international magazines such as Stern, Paris Match, LeMonde2 and The Washington Post Magazine. Eddy previously won the Zilveren Camera in 2012 for his series on the urban battlefield in Aleppo.
He was named Photojournalist of the Year twice. He also won the 2015 Zilveren Camera for his series Sinjar, the Battle for Highway 47. These photographs depict the fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
This is the third time Eddy van Wessel has won the Canon Zilveren Camera. He is the first person in 54 years to win the award for a third time. Ben van Meerendonck won the award three times: in 1950, 1958 and 1966.
Marc Prüst, jury chair of the De Zilveren Camera Foundation: "This year, the vote resulted in a decisive choice for the series from the war zone in Syria, where Eddy van Wessel documented the fall of Baghuz, the last settlement held by Islamic State, in March. It is an overwhelming series of dystopian images showing an exodus through a desert, where the distinction between victim and perpetrator is less straightforward than a simple division between good and evil."
The Storytelling Award went to Ilvy Njiokiktjien for her series Born Free, the NSP / Zilveren Camera Sports Photo of the Year went to Marcel van Hoorn for Mathieu van der Poel Wins the Amstel Gold Race, and the Paul Peters Photography Award went to Sabine van Wechem for Under Hilmano’s Spell.
