Robert Doisneau gained remarkable access to the world of famous artists working in Paris from 1937 onward. He visited them in their studios and captured personal moments in their lives: working, reflecting and even playing with their children.
Created in collaboration with Doisneau’s daughters, this book reveals these intimate moments from the lives and work of the artists.
Many of them remained famous, including Picasso, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Giacometti, Saul Steinberg, Marcel Duchamp and Le Corbusier, while others faded into the background and may perhaps one day be rediscovered.
Doisneau approaches all his subjects from a humble perspective. His black-and-white photography offers a fascinating insight into the artists’ daily lives and captures the nostalgia of a golden age of art in Paris.
Robert Doisneau (1912-1994) worked as an industrial photographer for Renault, a photojournalist for the Alliance Photo agency and a staff photographer for Vogue, where he pursued creative projects that brought him worldwide fame.
He received the Kodak Award (1947) and the Niépce Prize (1956), and held numerous solo exhibitions. Since his death, major retrospectives of his work have been staged in Paris, Chicago and New York. The title Robert Doisneau: Paris was previously published by Flammarion in 2005. This volume includes a foreword by Antoine de Baecque, a film critic, historian and prolific author on cinema.
