Dick van Duijn became famous worldwide for his photograph of a squirrel smelling a flower. The captured moment touched people from China to the United Kingdom and from the United States to Noordwijk, Van Duijn’s hometown. His lens has captured much more natural beauty, however, and these special photographs are also available in book form.
Dick photographs animals far from home as well as in the Netherlands—from small birds and majestic tigers to foxes and Scottish Highland calves. His images reveal the beauty of nature around the world and remind us how worthwhile it is to pause and appreciate it.
By profession, Dick van Duijn is not a photographer; his family works in the fish trade. Photography is a hobby he discovered only recently. He bought a camera and started shooting.
What unfolded in front of his lens was spectacular, because nature itself is spectacular. He is simply an observer with a good camera—and a great deal of patience. For some photographs, he spent long periods waiting in bird hides and shelters or lying on his stomach in meadows. Sometimes he was too early, sometimes too late, and sometimes everything came together.
