Sony Xperia 1 VII Review

The Xperia 1 VII, Sony’s new smartphone, was designed in collaboration with the engineers behind Sony Alpha cameras, the Walkman, and BRAVIA TVs, and features the latest technologies. New functions such as AI Camerawork and Auto Framing let users create stable, well-composed video footage.

Ultra-Wide-Angle Lens

The Xperia 1 VII has three rear cameras. Its 16 mm ultra-wide-angle lens uses a larger 48 MP 1/1.56-inch sensor—approximately 2.1 times larger than in the previous model—helping users capture bright photos at night.

The quality of these photos is comparable to images captured with full-frame cameras, with low noise and a wide dynamic range. The camera on the Xperia 1 VII produces minimal distortion and can also focus as close as approximately 5 cm for macro photography.

The wide-angle camera on the Xperia 1 VII covers 24-48 mm, equivalent to 2x optical zoom, and uses the Exmor T for mobile sensor for strong low-light performance. This sensor helps maintain bright, sharp, high-quality video even when AI Camerawork and Auto Framing crop the image.

While the telephoto lens on the Sony Xperia 1 VII reached 125 mm, the 1V II offers an 85-170 mm optical zoom range, making it possible to capture distant subjects at high resolution.

New Functions: AI Camerawork & Auto Framing

The new AI Camerawork function helps users create stable, professional-quality video while keeping the subject centered, even when walking around and filming a moving subject.

Powerful image stabilization and human-pose detection make this possible by keeping the subject’s position consistent. Even inexperienced camera users can therefore create professional-looking smartphone video.

The Auto Framing function uses AI to track the subject and automatically crop the image so it remains centered on screen. When filming a moving subject, users only need to point the camera toward it, and the phone follows it automatically.

Smooth, stable video footage without having to look at the screen.

Auto Framing can capture two versions of a video: one showing the entire scene and another cropped to focus on a close-up of the subject.

BRAVIA Image Quality

To improve the viewing experience in overexposed conditions, Sony added a light sensor to the back of the Xperia 1 VII. It allows the screen’s brightness and color to adjust optimally to the surroundings.

Whether outdoors in bright sunlight or indoors in dim light, the Xperia 1 VII accurately detects ambient brightness and adjusts brightness, color gamut, and color temperature accordingly. Outdoors, the improved peak-brightness display and Sunlight Vision function improve visibility in direct sunlight for a comfortable viewing experience.

Powerful Performance and Efficient Operation

The Xperia 1 VII uses the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, making the NPU, CPU, and GPU considerably faster and more energy efficient. These improvements deliver smooth performance for AI features, photography, and gaming while keeping battery consumption low.

Sustainability

The product box is made from Sony’s Original Blended Material, an environmentally conscious material that enables completely plastic-free packaging. Approximately 84% of the materials used for certain components inside and outside the device are environmentally conscious plastics, including SORPLAS made from recycled and plant-based resin.

Price and Availability

The Xperia 1 VII was offered at launch on May 13, 2025, in Slate Black, Moss Green, and Orchid Purple, with a suggested retail price of approximately €1,499.
