The New Sony Alpha 7R V

The Sony A7R V is the latest camera in the 7R series within Sony’s Alpha range of mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras.

The new Alpha 7R V offers 61 MP resolution, advanced 8K video capabilities and effective 8-stop image stabilization. The Alpha 7R V also features a new tilting and fully articulating display, high-speed data-transfer functions, improved controls and smooth workflow integration. Sony’s latest camera is designed for professionals who need a premium high-resolution camera.

High resolution

The latest BIONZ XR processor and a 35mm full-frame, back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor with approximately 61 effective megapixels capture fine detail. The processor makes full use of the sensor’s potential. As a result, the camera’s lowlight performance is improved across an ISO range of 100 to 32,000 for both stills and video, with a wide 15-stop dynamic range for photography.

Image stabilization
The image stabilization system of the Alpha 7RV has been greatly improved. This new camera now features a highly accurate stabilization unit, advanced gyro sensors and optimized image stabilization algorithms.

Apart from 8-stop stabilization for photography, the new stabilization algorithm provides precise detection and control down to the single pixel level. This way, photographers can take full advantage of the potential of the 61 MP sensor and display the smallest details.

‍Pixel Shift Multi Shooting
Sony’s latest camera also offers improved Pixel Shift Multi Shooting, using precise in-body image-stabilization control. It captures multiple images that are composited on a computer into a 240.8-million-pixel image (19,008 x 12,672 pixels).

The Alpha 7RV also supports precise and versatile flash control for extra creative flexibility. In addition, the Alpha 7RV effectively suppresses the flicker of artificial light for photo and video in difficult lighting conditions.

Cinematic Features

Sony's latest camera offers 8K 24/25p video, 4K video oversampled from 6.2K without pixel binning, an efficient MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 codec, intra-recording, 10-bit 4:2:2 recording and much more for high image quality and flexible post-processing. The camera also offers improved object recognition for unprecedented reliability in real-time tracking, breathing compensation and the ability to use camera metadata for post-processing.

In addition to in-body image stabilization with Active mode, the Alpha 7RV is compatible with a selection of lenses with built-in image stabilization for an even more stable shooting frame and smooth shots.

Operability and reliability

The Alpha 7R V features a new tilting and fully articulating LCD monitor, combining the convenience of a tilting screen with the flexibility of a side-opening design. It also has a 9.44-million-dot electronic viewfinder. The Alpha 7R V also provides two CFexpress Type A/SDXC-compatible media slots, a redesigned touchscreen menu and numerous customizable controls.

Professionals can also streamline their workflow with the Alpha 7R V’s updated connectivity. Data can be transferred at high speed over Wi-Fi (802.11ac) 2x2 MIMO or through a wired SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps connection via USB-C. In addition to efficient remote shooting and photo and video transfers, its USB streaming functions support UVC/UAC streaming from the camera in 4K (QFHD) with audio.

The Alpha 7R V has improved heat dissipation for longer recording times, an updated dust- and moisture-resistant design, and a durable magnesium-alloy body.

Prices and availability

At launch, the new Alpha 7R VI was announced for availability in the Benelux from November through authorized Sony dealers, at a price of €4,500.
