Alongside the EOS R6 V, Canon has also announced the new Canon RF 20-50mm F4L IS USM PZ. It is Canon’s first full-frame RF lens with integrated power zoom.
The lens is clearly aimed at hybrid creators and videographers who want to combine compact equipment with smooth zoom movements during video recording.
Power zoom integrated into the lens
The RF 20-50mm F4L IS USM PZ features a built-in servo zoom. This lets videographers zoom in and out smoothly and with control, without external accessories.
The zoom ring also functions as a manual zoom-by-wire control for photography and video.
Designed for hybrid use
With a 20-50mm range and a constant maximum aperture of f/4, Canon positions the lens as a versatile solution for vlogging, travel, interior photography, and general video recording.
The relatively wide 20mm angle of view should provide additional flexibility for handheld video and self-recording.
Compact design
The lens weighs approximately 420 grams, making it relatively compact for a full-frame L-series zoom lens.
According to Canon, the optical image stabilization provides up to 6 stops of compensation. Combined with compatible cameras with IBIS, this can increase to approximately 8 stops.
L-series image quality
Canon equips the lens with UD elements and Air Sphere Coating to limit flare, ghosting, and chromatic aberrations. Focus breathing is also optically suppressed, which is especially useful for videographers because the angle of view changes less noticeably during focusing.
Fast autofocus
The lens uses a Nano USM motor for autofocus. It is designed to provide fast, quiet, and accurate focusing for both photography and video. The minimum focusing distance is approximately 24 centimeters.
Developed for the EOS R6 V
Canon introduced the lens alongside the Canon EOS R6 V. Among other features, the camera has a dedicated zoom lever that directly controls the lens’s power zoom.
