As a photographer or journalist you do not always want to be explicitly present. Sometimes discretion is simply more pleasant, for example when you want to capture street scenes, animals or a natural situation without disturbing the environment. In other cases, working inconspicuously can be important for your safety, your source protection or the sensitivity of the subject.
That does not mean that you can secretly photograph or film anywhere. Especially with hidden cameras, private areas, recognizable people or sensitive locations, it is important to know in advance what is and is not allowed. Working discreetly therefore not only starts with your camera, but also with preparation, care and respect for privacy.
With the tips below, your creativity, professionalism and safety will be less at risk.
Choose compact equipment
A large camera with a striking telephoto lens quickly attracts attention. Anyone who wants to work inconspicuously should therefore choose one compact camera, a small system camera or in some cases a smartphone. Modern compact cameras and smartphones nowadays deliver surprisingly high image quality and are much less noticeable in the street scene.
Nowadays, these cameras are also able to take high-quality images. This also applies to most of them smartphones. This means that you are not immediately recognizable to those around you as a journalist or photographer.
Also pay attention to accessories. A large camera bag, flash, tripod or eye-catching strap can still reveal that you are consciously taking photographs. A neutral bag or simple cover makes your presence less obvious.
Wear neutral clothing
Your clothing also plays a role. Bright colors, large logos, busy prints or recognizable brand clothing are more likely to stick in the memory of bystanders. Neutral clothing in calm tones, such as dark blue, gray, black or beige, ensures that you attract less attention.
The goal is not to disguise yourself, but to blend in with the environment. In a busy city this requires something different than in a nature reserve, at an event or in a business environment.
Shoot at specific times
If you want to be less noticeable, it is advisable to investigate in advance when a location is the quietest. Early in the morning, later in the evening or outside peak hours are often suitable times to work quietly. This is not only more pleasant, but also gives you more control over composition, light and background.
Do you have to photograph a location multiple times? Then alternate your tenses and points of view. Not because you have something to hide, but because hanging around visibly with a camera for a long time quickly raises questions and can influence the natural situation.
Know the rules and boundaries
Photographing discreetly does not mean that everything is allowed. Check the rules of the place where you work in advance. In some locations you are not allowed to take photographs, film or use drones. This applies, for example, to certain buildings, stations, airports, museums, private areas, nature reserves and events.
Abroad, the rules can be even stricter. Therefore, inquire in advance about local legislation, permits and possible restrictions. This is extra important for drone photography: specific rules apply to flying, registering and taking pictures both in the Netherlands and abroad.
Consider privacy and source protection
If you work as a journalist or photographer with sensitive information, digital security is important. Consider storing files securely, encrypting sensitive documents and carefully handling names, locations and metadata in photos.
A reliable one VPN can help make your internet connection more secure, for example when you work over public WiFi or send sensitive information online. A VPN can also protect your IP address. However, it is not a license to ignore the rules: digital security is intended to protect yourself, your sources and your material.
Sensitive information that you send as a journalist or photographer is also encrypted. This data is then difficult to intercept and cannot be used by cyber criminals or the government.
